Helix Collective Film Scoring Ensemble co-produces the Los Angeles Live Score Film Festival with the Academy of Scoring Arts, ArtShare L.A., and Speakeasy Sound. Filmmakers submit yet-to-be scored short films and film composers submit reels for consideration. 10 winning filmmakers and 10 winning composers are chosen and paired with each other to produce an original score for the film. The scores are written for the Helix Collective Scoring Ensemble musicians. At the festival, the films are screened while the original soundtrack is performed live by the ensemble! Audiences vote for Best Picture and Best Musical Score. The awardees are given free studio time to have the music recorded, edited, and set to picture for release!

Now in it’s fourth year, LALSFF’s goal is to highlight the role of collaboration between composers and filmmakers. Acting like a talent agent, the festival brings experts in the two disciplines together. At the screenings, filmmakers and composers hear and see the work of new colleagues, meet new collaborators, and establish working relationships with each other. Additionally, the Helix Collective Film Scoring Ensemble proves that it is possible to get talented experienced film musicians to play and record for independent films on an accommodating budget! Unique films deserve unique live music!
